OpenAI has launched Astra for Law, a new offering for law firms and legal technology companies, built around GPT-6 Astra and tailored for professional legal work.
The launch includes a new Legal Search Index covering U.S. case law, statutes, regulations, court rules, and administrative decisions across more than 230 million URLs. Through its work with Free Law Project, the nonprofit behind CourtListener, the index includes more than 99.9% of published U.S. precedential case law, complementing legal content from providers such as Thomson Reuters.
Harvey and Legora will be among the API customers able to build on Astra for Law, while new integrations include Relativity and Clio.
OpenAI is also expanding privacy and governance measures through a Trusted Access Program for eligible law firms, including Zero Data Retention on the API and default exclusion of ChatGPT Enterprise usage from human review. The company is working with Latham & Watkins on information permissions, ethical walls, client instructions, and firm oversight.
Astra for Law will initially be available to selected firms through ChatGPT and Codex, with API access coming soon. It will appear as "GPT-6 Astra Law" and gpt-6-astra-law in the API.
